Foreign Service Test Prep 2023

The Foreign Service Officer Test, or FSO, is the first graded assessment taken by individuals interested in becoming US diplomats (Foreign Service Officers). The FSO, which is overseen by the Department of State, assesses your knowledge in a variety of topics, including English grammar, US government, and world geography, to name a few.

The test is divided into four sections, three of which are multiple-choice and one of which is a written essay. ``Job knowledge,`` ``English expression,`` and ``situational judgment`` are the three multiple-choice sections. Only if you pass the multiple-choice sections with a minimum score of 154 will your essay be assessed. The FSO takes roughly three hours to complete in total.

Pearson administers the FSO, which can be completed online, via remote proctor, or at a testing center.

The FSO pass rate is between 30 and 40%. This indicates that the vast majority of applicants pass the FSO. The reasons for the low pass rate are numerous, but we can summarize them as follows: the breadth of knowledge required to perform well in the job knowledge section, applicants running out of time on the English Expression section, and a lack of professional experience to determine appropriate approaches to the situational judgment questions.
